Embracing Ramadan in the Elementary Classroom: Tips and Resources for Teachers

The Essence of Ramadan for Our Young Learners

Navigating the school day without food or drink from dawn till dusk is a profound commitment for students observing Ramadan. It’s a time that tests their focus and endurance, presenting unique challenges within the educational environment. As educators, our role in supporting these students is paramount, offering adjustments and accommodations to ensure their success and comfort during this holy month.

"Teachers need to give grace to students and administrators should also consider teachers celebrating Ramadan."

- Ms. Amous (IA at Jefferson Houston Elementary)

As the moon heralds the arrival of Ramadan, our classrooms become a tapestry of learning opportunities about this revered period for Muslim families around the globe. Observing Ramadan, a sacred time marked by fasting, reflection, prayer, community, and charity, enriches our understanding of diverse cultures. It’s a time for Muslims the world over, to honor the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad, with this year's observation stretching over approximately 30 days of devotion and self-reflection.

Crafting an Embrace of Inclusivity in Our Classrooms

  • A Lesson in Cultural Respect: Begin with an open discussion about Ramadan and its pivotal role in Islam. It’s an invitation to cultivate a community of respect and understanding among all students.
  • Consideration for the Fasting: Adapt physical exertion and outdoor activities to support the needs of fasting students, especially under the sun's gaze.

Ramadan Through Creative Exploration

To complement our discussions, we've designed special coloring pages that reflect the spirit of Ramadan. These tools serve not only as an educational resource but also as a creative outlet for students:

Visual Storytelling: Through images depicting Ramadan's traditions and symbols, we invite students into a visual exploration of this significant time.

Inclusive Engagement: Ramadan-themed coloring pages provide a welcoming activity for all students, celebrating the month’s themes inclusively.

Creative Reflection: These coloring pages are a silent invitation to creativity, mirroring the reflective essence of Ramadan itself.

  • Cultivating Compassion: Ramadan presents a beautiful opportunity to explore themes of empathy, kindness, and the richness of diverse traditions.
  • Beyond Food: In keeping with the spirit of Ramadan, opt for non-food rewards and activities, maintaining the celebratory essence of school spirit. Flexible lunches in library spaces could be immensely helpful to students.

The Joy and Reflection of Ramadan

Amidst its challenges, Ramadan remains a beacon of joy, contemplation, and communal connection. Many students find profound significance in their fast, evening prayers, and the communal joy of iftars. Engaging in conversations about these traditions can deepen our students' understanding and appreciation of Ramadan.

A playful journey with the beloved Curious George, introducing young readers to the practices of Ramadan.

By weaving the themes of Ramadan into the fabric of our educational practices, we offer a tapestry of learning, respect, and inclusion. The introduction of Ramadan-themed coloring pages, along with thoughtful classroom adjustments and enriching literature, allows us to support our fasting students while broadening the cultural horizons of all learners. In doing so, we not only honor the traditions of our Muslim students but also cultivate a classroom environment rich in empathy and global understanding.

The Science of Brain Breaks:

Enhancing Academic Achievement in Students

April Fusilier

Preschool kids doing yoga

I

n the bustling world of education, where the focus often leans heavily on academic

achievement and curriculum goals, the concept of 'brain breaks' is emerging as a key element in enhancing student learning and performance. At Golden Sprouts Consulting, we are dedicated to integrating this research-backed approach into everyday classroom practices. But what exactly are brain breaks, and how do they contribute to academic success?

Brain breaks are short, structured breaks taken during learning activities. They are designed to shift focus from cognitively demanding tasks, allowing the brain to rest and rejuvenate. These breaks, typically lasting from one to five minutes, involve physical activity, mindfulness exercises, or creative tasks that provide a mental diversion.

Proven Strategy to enchace academic achievement & Motivation

T

o understand how brain breaks boost learning, it's essential to grasp the concept

of the 'affective filter.' This term, coined by linguist Stephen Krashen, refers to the emotional and psychological barriers that can inhibit language acquisition and learning in general. A high affective filter, often caused by stress, anxiety, or boredom, can block information processing and retention. Brain breaks help in lowering this filter, creating an environment conducive to learning by reducing stress and increasing engagement.

Kids

Several studies validate the benefits of brain breaks. Research indicates that these pauses in learning can lead to improved attention, higher levels of participation, better retention of information, and an overall boost in academic performance. Neuroscientific research also shows that physical activity during brain breaks can increase blood flow to the brain, enhancing cognitive function.

Brain breaks act as a reset button for the mind. By stepping away from academic tasks, students are given an opportunity to recharge, leading to increased focus and productivity when they return to learning activities. This reset can be particularly beneficial after lengthy periods of concentration or during subjects that students find challenging.

At Golden Sprouts Consulting, we're excited to introduce our new 'Would You Rather' series, an innovative tool for brain breaks that combines fun, engagement, and learning. Our upcoming March and April videos will feature a series of thought-provoking and entertaining questions designed to give students a creative and enjoyable break from their studies. Accompanying these videos are learning resources that teachers can utilize to seamlessly integrate brain breaks into their daily routines.

Incorporating brain breaks into the school day is more than just a brief pause from academics; it's a scientifically proven strategy to enhance learning and academic achievement. By lowering the affective filter, these breaks allow students to reset, leading to improved focus, retention, and overall performance. Stay tuned for our 'Would You Rather' series, and embrace the power of brain breaks with Golden Sprouts Consulting.

Charting a Successful Path in Education for 2024

Girl Raising Hand Inside the Classroom

Welcome to a new chapter, fellow educators and dedicated parents! As we step into 2024, it's a time for reflection and setting fresh, meaningful goals. With a blend of enthusiasm and a hint of nostalgia, let’s explore how we can make this year one of our most rewarding and successful in both our professional and personal lives. Let’s navigate this journey of growth and learning together!

January 2024 calendar flat lay
Stacked up moving boxes

Last year was a milestone for me, stepping up as a team lead and embracing the challenge of relocating my kindergarten resources (which was a mission and a half). It was a year of introspection as well as redefining what impact means to me in education. Embracing new technologies, I've continued to weave innovation into my classroom experiences. There’s much to be proud of, and yet, so much more to achieve.

We're turning a new page from the traditional Lucy Calkins' approach, welcoming a more phonics-centered methodology. As a proponent of balanced and thoughtful teaching, I believe in equipping each student with a bespoke educational experience. With the right tools in hand, we can create personalized pathways to success for every learner in our classrooms.

Fostering my growth as a leader and nurturing a new generation of educators is at the forefront this year. It's about creating an environment where teaching excellence flourishes. Remember, differentiation is key – it applies to both our students and our approaches to effective relationships, leadership, and collaboration.

I admit, my commitment to my Peloton wavered last year around June’s summer trip adventures. But this year is about reigniting that passion for wellness and finding new inspirations in fitness. It’s a journey back to self-care, keeping health and wellness as priorities.

In education, adaptability is our strength. This year, I’m focused on championing best practices, enhancing phonological awareness, and improving literacy skills. Let’s embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, ensuring every student achieves fluency and confidence in reading.

What to Know about Diwali

October 24, 2022

Some school districts have the day off in honor of Diwali but not everyone knows the interesting history celebrated by over a billion people worldwide.

Photogaphed by: Udayaditya Barua

Fireworks and clay lamps light up the streets during Diwali celebrations. The Festival of Lights honors the victory of light over darkness. For over 1 billion people it symbolizes the strength of the human spirit to choose good over evil and the light within. As such, Dawali is India’s most important celebration of the year. Even outside of India, Diwali plays an important part for Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, and many other groups within Indian culture.

Diwali has a varied history amongst different groups which contributes to its popularity a great deal. Some Hindus associate this five-day festival with the return of the victorious warrior Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and Lakshman after fourteen years of exile. Others associate it with the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. She is the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Jains believe it was the day when Lord Mahavira achieved nirvana. Sikhs celebrate Diwali as the freeing of the sixth guru, Guru Hargobind. Buddhists mark this event as when emperor Ashoka embraced Buddhism as his faith.

Happy Diwali to all those who are celebrating this new year!

The word Diwali means “row of lights” in an Ancient language of Sanskrit. People decorate their homes with lights and oil lamps, called diyas.

People exchange gifts and sweets, enjoy delicious feasts, watch firework displays and wear new clothes. It’s a time to clean and decorate your home, too.

The foundation of the Golden Temple was also laid on Diwali.

The festival is also observed as the beginning of a new financial year.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

Honoring the Rich Legacy of Latinos and Afro-Latinos

By: APRIL FUSILIER

As Hispanic Heritage Month unfolds, it's the perfect time to reflect on the profound contributions of Latinos and Afro-Latinos to American society. This month, which spans from September 15th to October 15th, serves as an annual reminder of the vibrant cultures, histories, and legacies that enrich our nation. For me, personally, this month is a journey back to my own roots, to the stories of my beloved grandmother Rosa Santiago and her partner Ramón Concepción Ramos and her husband Juan de Dios Rexach who played pivotal roles in shaping my understanding of heritage, legacy, and resilience.

Juan de Dios Rexach: A Note of Resilience Juan de Dios Rexach, a notable bass player, was married to my beloved grandmother Rosa Santiago. As a dark-skinned Puerto Rican, he faced racism during the segregation era. Despite the adversity, he continued to share the gift of music and culture, leaving an indelible mark on our family's artistic heritage.

Ramón Concepción Ramos: A Pillar of Strength Ramón Concepción Ramos, nicknamed “Monchile”, was a key figure in my grandmother Rosa Santiago's life and our family's story. Born in Puerto Rico in 1905, he embodied the essence of resilience and determination. His claim to fame was as an outfielder in the Negro leagues. Ramón's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of Afro-Latinos who have persevered through trials and tribulations.

A Legacy of Family and Culture Growing up in a close-knit Puerto Rican community, I was immersed in a rich tapestry of traditions, music, and stories that celebrated our Hispanic heritage. My grandmother Rosa Santiago, along with Ramón Concepción Ramos and Juan de Dios Rexach, were living examples of the strength that comes from embracing one's cultural identity. Ramón and Juan's love for Puerto Rican music, dance, and cuisine was infectious, and it instilled in me a deep appreciation for the beauty of our heritage.

As an educator, researcher, and mother, I've dedicated myself to ensuring that the next generation has the opportunity to learn about the contributions of Latinos and Afro-Latinos. To this end, I've created 25 flashcards featuring notable Hispanic leaders reimagined as animated characters. These resources are designed to foster a sense of pride and understanding among young learners. They celebrate the achievements of figures like Tito Puente, Frida Khalo, and many more!

During Hispanic Heritage Month, let us celebrate the rich tapestry of Latino and Afro-Latino cultures that have woven themselves into the fabric of America. Let us honor the unsung heroes like Ramón Concepción Ramos and Juan de Dios Rexach, who, through their resilience, have enriched our nation's story. And let us continue to educate and inspire the generations to come, ensuring that the legacy of Hispanic heritage remains strong and enduring.

In celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate the diversity, strength, and contributions of a community that has played an integral role in shaping the United States. It's a time for reflection, appreciation, and the sharing of stories that inspire the next generation to embrace their heritage and forge their own paths toward a brighter future.

Celebrating Sign Languages Day: Fostering Inclusivity in My Classroom

By: April Fusilier

Today, as we celebrate Sign Languages Day, I want to share a heartwarming aspect of my classroom - the use of sign language. As a teacher and someone deeply passionate about inclusivity, this is a journey I cherish.

I have long known that sign language is not just a tool but also a bridge that connects hearts and voices. This year I welcomed a wonderful student into my class whose mother is an integral part of the deaf community. This beautiful connection prompted me to delve deeper the world of sign language, and I can't express how grateful I am.

The Magic of Inclusivity

One of the most beautiful things about sign language is that it transcends spoken words. It's a visual language that speaks volumes about acceptance, inclusion, and the celebration of our unique voices. I've found it to be a powerful resource for classroom management and, more importantly, for creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued.

From A to Z, We Sign Together

Now, if you step into my classroom, you'll notice something special right away. Our alphabet isn't just a series of letters; it's a dance of hands. The entire alphabet is beautifully displayed in sign language, a constant reminder that we're all a part of something bigger than ourselves.

But it doesn't stop there. We have signs for everyday essentials like 'bathroom,' 'tissues,' 'questions,' and 'water.' These signs are posted right below my smartboard, so they're always within view during our morning meetings. It's like a secret code that we all share, a language that binds us together.

Emotions Speak Louder in Sign Language

My feelings chart, a vital tool for emotional awareness and expression, also includes sign language. It's not just about understanding emotions; it's about showing them, about letting every child communicate their feelings in a way that feels comfortable and safe.

A Circle of Inclusion

Through sign language, I hope to create a circle of inclusion that wraps around every child in my classroom. I want my students to know that everyone has a unique voice, and it's something to be celebrated.

It's a journey of empathy, love, and learning that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

I'm reminded of my own son, who is also a part of the deaf community, even though he doesn't sign. This journey has given me a deeper understanding of the diverse ways we communicate and connect. It's a journey of empathy, love, and learning that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world.

So, as we celebrate Sign Languages Day, I invite you to think about the power of sign language in fostering inclusivity and celebrating diversity. It's not just a set of gestures; it's a language of love, acceptance, and unity. And in my classroom, it's a warm embrace that says, "You belong here."
